Last summer, Yum! Brands, Inc., which operates over 52,000 restaurants in more than 150 countries and territories, released its 2020 Global Citizenship & Sustainability Report. The report highlights the organization’s strategic investments in socially responsible growth, risk management, and sustainable stewardship practices. Climate action is a chief focal point for Yum! and subsidiaries—including PRB Mexico, which operates more than 500 Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut restaurants in 31 Mexican states.
PRB Mexico brought in GSE to help the company manage and track energy utilities for over 200 locations more efficiently, as well as improve maintenance and operations, and devise new energy solutions. Yum! announced a plan to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 46{02bc60b2b15e9d3ddf7d01db5bf660b20065ea386f2ed8906503999d6c4177c4} below its 2019 levels by 2030. GSE has pledged to help achieve that goal.
Efforts to Minimize PRB Mexico’s Carbon Footprint
As with all of its clients, GSE developed a customized plan to tackle PRB Mexico’s most significant obstacles and goals. While many companies aim to reduce GHG emissions through efficiency, operational improvements, and new energy solutions, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. GSE considered PRB Mexico’s unique position and needs in the fast-food industry. Developing a strategy that could reduce GHG emissions yet scale across all of PRB Mexico’s lines of business was a unique challenge. GSE had to monitor and analyze each active energy management system to develop a holistic strategy to address PRB Mexico’s needs.
Interpreting energy management system data is a difficult and cumbersome process. Over the last five years, the GSE team has set practical goals, implemented changes, and tracked progress based on system data in more than 200 restaurants across 31 states. As a result, PRB Mexico has saved approximately 44,542,697 kWh in energy, which is equivalent to avoiding nearly 34,800 tons of GHG emissions.
In other words, this is akin to eliminating carbon dioxide emissions resulting from powering 5,734 homes for one year! It’s also equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 521,961 tree seedlings grown for 10 years!
These measurements are based on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator, which helps people and businesses understand how to measure GHG emissions.
Needless to say, PRB Mexico’s focus on energy savings is beneficial on many levels—and the organization’s carbon footprint is getting smaller each year! In 2017 alone, GSE helped PRB Mexico save 6,499,248 kWh of energy. Between January 2021 and November 2021, the savings realized was 10,664,560 kWh. This incredible feat is a testament to how GSE constantly refines and enhances its energy-saving programs for clients.
Utilizing GSE’s energy management tools, data reporting, and expert engineers, PRB Mexico continues to improve its operational efficiency and reduce energy and food waste.
